About Aberdeen Fire Dept:
Aberdeen Fire Department has been a fully paid department since 1909. We currently have 33 full time personnel plus a full time Chief, Assistant Chief and Administrative Secretary. The rank system by shift, in decending order, is : Battalion Chief, Captain, Engineer, and Firefighter. All our uniformed personnel have a minimum of EMT training. In addition many are "defib" and IV technicians. Our department currently staffs 13 paramedics and at all times runs at least one dedicated paramedic unit. Our paramedics are dual trained firefighters and participate in all firefighting activities. Our shift personnel work 24 hours on, 48 hours off, plus time off for kelly days and vacation days.
The Aberdeen Fire Department provides fire protection to approximately 18,000 residents. In addition, we provide ALS ambulance service and transport within the city limits and also to many surrounding rural communities. In 1998, Aberdeen Fire Department responded to a total of 4,437 emergency calls. 3,113 of those calls were ambulance calls. Aberdeen Fire Department has two stations. Our substation at South Aberdeen has three personnel staffing an engine or ambulance, depending on the nature of the call. Headquarters personnel staff one ALS ambulance, engine, aerial ladder truck, and Battalion Chief/rescue truck. The total number of personnel on duty at any given time varies due to vacation schedules and kelly days.
